Justin and I just got back from a funeral. The man was 35 years old and killed in an automobile accident. How do I know this man? He was married to a former coworker of mine whom I still keep in contact with. I didn't know Burt well, though there was always a smile on his face. His look was very intimidating. Burt was a large man and I swear all of 6'5" tall.. (*that's my guess). He was a big teddy bear.
It's amazing how much you don't know about people. I never knew that Burt played college football at MTSU, or that he was a Deacon of his church. I now know those interesting facts and many more. Evidently everyone who Burt has come in contact with has touched their life in only positive ways. To hear his best friend, former teammate and coach talk about him brought a smile to my face, laughter from my lips and tears to my eyes. He was loved by all.
Justin and I were talking on the way home and I mentioned that I always had a question about faith and how God can take someone that wonderful away from this life. Burts brother ( a minister) said something so profound, that we couldn't believe we'd never heard it before. He said, God did not take Burt from us, he only received him. To me, that makes so much sense now and I hope that it gives Monica, Nathaniel and Amelia some comfort in their lives, knowing that Burt is with God now, feeling no pain, sadness or remorse.
Burt was a great man who will be missed by all.
Rest in peace.
